For Safety’s Sake?

I wouldn’t hold back radical technological developments, from to Nanotechnology to Artificial Intelligence, because I was afriad of potential distaters these things may cause in the coming future, anymore than I would ask a society to dispose of thier handguns or laptop computers, because some people have used these devices for thier own trite anti-social agendas.

To live a life where my personal progress is not defined by my fears, is one of my main goals. I suspect this may be a useful approach for society in general, in order for us to to keep exploring our potential. After all, what’s the point of living if your not learning, exploring, and taking risks!

The following is a fictional accounting of a presentation being given at the United Nations in the world of Questionable Content, a comic where AI is a normal accepted part of society (but that this fact has very little baring on the plot of the comic). I had to share it because it is so…

Interesting, guess I should check out this comic book sometime soon 😊

JESUS CHRIST!!!

I keep getting headaches for what seems like no apparent reason!…Blerg

Cool illustrations! I saw some models of a couple of these creatures in the “Mythical Creatures” exhibit at the Museum Of Natural History years back! I’d like to see them bring it back.

Glitches and Ghosts

Last night I laid down to sleep, not falling right out. I opened my eyes and a minute later I saw an apparition! It was an old man, looking right at me; bland expression on his face, with a hint of pain, looking slightly disfigured.

With several environmental factors to consider; lights from passing cars, that blue light from my computer speakers I seldom turn off, the lighting display the Nintendo Wii emits when I think I’ve turned it off (leaving it on standby) and a strange spin-cycle begins, waking me up at 3am thinking Ravers have snuck into my living room, it’s hard to come to a conclusion about what I saw. After all, it could have simply been a Nintendo-induced (Yes, I just wanted to say “Nintendo-induced”) abstraction taking human form in my mind or a random Hallucination. I can’t be sure.

I will say that when I saw it I got pretty damn startled. My heart started racing so that I could feel my pulse surge through my body, slightly shaking my pillow, getting stronger with each successive pump. I was confused, but also strangely thrilled to see such an anomaly. Shortly after, I fell to sleep. This morning I woke up still wondering what it was I saw, finding it to have been an interesting experience.

To add to the strangeness of the past 12+ hours, when I arrived at work this morning I looked at my phone and saw that it was Thursday. I could have sworn it was Wednesday and spent the better part of the morning wondering if I had had one of those “X-Files” moments where 24 hours of my life was lost due to the static of flying saucers interfering with the time/space continuum, while hovering around looking for an anal probe victim, or if some incorporeal entity managed to keep my mind asleep for an entire day, possessing my body and causing all sorts of mischief in the human world!

When I got to work, I didn’t get any of those weird looks I get the day after I call out sick, so I do think I was at work yesterday and not possessed by a wicked old man’s ghost and wandering the fringes of New York City. If I was not here yesterday, I’d rather not bring it up to anyone just yet. I also take comfort in knowing I did not see my picture in the newspaper for taking a bite out of a random Straphanger, or pissing in the holy water at St. Paul’s Cathedral.

I suppose I will come to a conclusion on my potential disappearance when I get the next monthly printout of accrued sick and vacation time and check to see if any sick time was put in for this week of January. Then, and only then, will I know if I was a victim of some ghastly time-altering demonic possession, or if my weekly routine of work, home, and Battlestar Galactica has just blurred the line between days.

Darkly,

Kilch
